Well, it’s been an exciting month, but now March is coming to an end — and so is our March Madness. We had great participation this year for Pop Cults’ very first March Madness, and we hope you enjoyed participating as much as we enjoyed putting it together! That said, let’s see the results!
3rd Place: the Daleks
The Daleks are armored aliens that are considered to be the Time Lords‘ greatest enemies in Doctor Who. Although Daleks look entirely robotic, they’re actually cybernetic organisms with a biological body encased in and supported by a protective outer shell made of “Dalekanium” (I did not make that up). The Dalek’s armor is nearly indestructible, and they shoot lasers. They also have grabber arms that look like plungers, so there’s that. Daleks are fearsome foes, but they are also arrogant and lack imagination; they are also weak against extreme temperatures — either high or low.
The Daleks beat out the Kryptonians from DC Comics for third place. Although those from the planet Krypton get superhuman strength and abilities from Earth’s yellow sun, it would be easy enough for the Daleks to block them from any yellow suns, thus rendering them as weak as any other fleshy aliens they come across.
2nd Place: the Zerg
The Zerg Swarm from Starcraft is a terrifying and ruthless amalgamation of biologically advanced arthropodal aliens. Like the Borg from Star Trek, they are dedicated to the pursuit of genetic perfection; the zerg relentlessly hunt down and assimilate advanced species across the galaxy, incorporating useful bits genetic code into their own to improve themselves.
Should the Zerg have won against our first place contenders? According to my friend Kytten, an avid Starcraft player, “The terrans have lots of transforming machines…and the Zerg roll over them like they are nothing.“
1st Place: the Transformers
Our winners, and the aliens you voted as the the best in sci-fi: the Autobots and Decepticons — AKA the Transformers! The Transformers are a group of sentient robots from the planet Cybertron. Both Autobots and Decepticons are humanoid, but can transform into machines, vehicles, and other mechanical objects. The Autobots faction are led by the Optimus Prime, whom conveniently turns into an Earth big-rig truck. Autobots primarily turn into land vehicles such as trucks and cars, whereas Decepticons largely turn into military vehicles and aircraft.
Although the battle for good and evil between these giant sentient robots may never come to an end, there’s no doubt that you, our readers, think they are the best aliens in all of sci-fi — or at least the best of the top 16 that we chose for our March Madness!
